Norwalk Public Schools is no longer making school bus deliveries for meals. And Bridgeport Rescue Mission has had to stop serving take-home meals at our public housing communities.

File Your Tax Return for Free
The IRS has extended the deadline to file your taxes to July 15, 2020. However, many VITA sites across the state have closed to ensure the health and safety of volunteers and taxpayers. Until sites reopen, there are several options for free tax assistance including a virtual model in which tax filers work with a tax preparer during a telephone call.

Race 4 Chase logoRace 4 Chase

2020 Triathlon Program Application Race 4 Chase is named for Chase Kowalski, an amazing little boy from Newtown, who loved to run. Race 4 Chase strives to empower kids to reach their full potential.

Registration is for children ages 5-13 years old wishing to participate in the Race 4 Chase Triathlon Program. This program provides youth with a fun, skill building, life-changing experience by introducing them to the sport of triathlon.

This free program runs for 6 weeks beginning Monday, June 22, 2020 and ending Saturday, August 1, 2020. Program times are 8:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. daily, Monday - Friday. Race day is the culmination of the program for the YMCA Race 4 Chase programs at YMCA Camp Sloper in Southington (1000 East Street, Southington CT) on Saturday, August 1, 2020. All participants will compete in a Youth Triathlon on this day.

Listing of important dates of the program:

  • Matching payment and Below budget services start November 1st. This is the date that our clients can apply for winter protection and it lasts until May 1st of the following year.
  • Everyone placed on winter protection will be protected from utilities shut off until May 1st.
  • Clients who are placed on matching payment with the utility companies will have to keep paying their portion of the bill in order to stay on matching payment. If a client misses any of the payments, they will be taken of the matching payment by utility companies and will be in danger of being shut off after May 1st.
  • Clients who receive a shut off notice after May 1st will be offered mediation with the utility companies throughout the summer.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who make $56,000 or less who need assistance in preparing their tax returns. IRS certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing of Federal and State returns. Did you earn $56,000 or less last year? You may qualify for the EarnedIncome Tax Credit (EITC). NOTE: Filing/payment date for state and federal tax returns extended through July 15th.

Washington Village CookbookWashington Village Cookbook

One unifier over the years has been food

As one of the oldest public housing complexes in our nation, and the oldest in Connecticut, Washington Village has seen a great many residents since its cornerstone was laid in the year 1940. Families of adults and youth of all ages from countries across the world have made Washington Village their home, creating a community rich in cultural and ethnic diversity. This diversity also extends to the culinary arts.

In 2012, after the devastation created by Superstorm Sandy, a decision was made to replace and rebuild Washington Village. With the generous support of the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) through the Choice Neighborhood Initiative, a new, efficient, resilient Washington Village is being created. The goal is to protect and preserve the housing and personal enrichment opportunities provided to the residents of Washington Village and also to preserve the character and unique personality of this community. This collection of recipes is part of that effort as we create the new community: Soundview Landing.
